Botanical name:
Picea abies
Growth area:
Northern and Central Europe: Scandinavia (Sweden, Finland), the Baltic states (Latvia, Lithuania), Russia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Romania.
Quality: Grades:
A1, A2, A3, A4, B, C and D. Nordic Timber 1994: A and B, A, B and C Blue book: Grade boards, Knot-free three sides, Halvrena side yield, Halvrena centre yield, Grademix. Green book: O/S, Kwinta and Sexta, Schaalboards Halvrena. Dekker Hout's grade: In full saw blocks, whitewood is difficult to process as door or window frames, in view of the prevalent flaws of this wood (knots, resin canals etc.) In order to achieve a high-end product, finger joints and gluing are applied for this wood. Major flaws are removed from the basic material and the virtually flawless blocks are the basis for the various dimensions used in wall panelling and carpenting. The flawless blocks are separated into rift-sawn and back-sawn patterns and blocks with the same structure are finger-jointed, whereas glueable long lengths of the same structure are glued.
Colour of heartwood:
The heartwood is almost white to light yellow / light brown after exposure to air and light.
Colour of sapwood:
The sapwood is the same as the heartwood.
Mass density:
450-480 kg/m3; 16%m/m average.
Grain:
Generally rather straight-grained.
Fissure:
Cuts with embedded heartwood are subject to extensive fissure. Minor checks are frequent.
Warping:
Provided the wood was dried properly, it has only a moderate tendency to warping.
Knots:
Knots up to a diameter of 35 mm are frequent. The knots are generally dark brown and 3 to 5 times harder than the surrounding wood.
Bio-substances:
Whitewood contains resin pockets spread out.

Mould and insects:
Does not often occur.
Durability grade:
4 - low durability
Gluing:
Good
Machining:
Very easy to process with HS cutting tools. Rebate cutters to be equipped with pre-cutters in view of splintering. The hard knots cause grooves in the cutting tools, resulting in ‘blisters' on the planed wood.

General applications:
Provided that the timber is well-maintained and in compliance with the application conditions in KVT'95, whitewood is a durable alternative for front wall panelling. In finger-jointed and/or laminated form, it is highly suitable for various applications. It is used in the furniture industry for whitewood furniture. The construction sector is the principal user. The material is widely applied and many other wood processing companies make use of this wood species, for example the pallet and packaging materials industry. |
