Botanical name:

Intsia bijuga

Growth area:

Western Malaysia and Indonesia, in particular Sumatra, Irian Jaya (South East Asia).

Quality:

Select & Better KD and/or AD.

Colour of heartwood:

Brown to dark brown.

Colour of sapwood:

Grey / green +/- 50 mm wide rims. Sapwood is not allowed for front wall panelling.

Mass density:

500 kg/m3 -900 kg m/m average.

Grain:

Generally rather straight-grained.

Fissure:

Does not often occur.

Warping:

Carefully dried merbau does not often tend to warp. For timber that must remain purely straight and level, it is advisable to carefully select the slope of the grain. Straight-grained Merbau hardly has any warping.

Knots:

Large, intergrown knots may occur. Whether or not the part can be used must be assessed during production. Around the knots extensive slope of grain occurs, which may cause warping.

Bio-substances:

Yellow coloured sulphur lines, giving Merbau its attractive hallmark pattern. The dust that is released during sanding may be irritating to the respiratory tract and the skin. Colorants that come into contact with water dissolve, giving off large brown stains (this is also called ‘bleeding'). However, bleeding can be prevented by properly finishing the wood: TA (transparent) or DA (opaque) with sufficient thickness before the Merbau timber leaves the company.

  Mould and insects:
Does not often occur. Large wormholes with a diameter of 10 mm may sometimes occur. The large holes must be cut out.

Durability grade:
2 durable wall panelling KVT'95 grade A.

Gluing:
Good; if necessary, degrease first.

Processing:
Can be machined with HS or HW hard-metal tools. Easy to saw, plane, profile, drill and sand. The use of cutting tools with precutters is required in order to prevent splintering around rebates. Merbau is an excellent wood species for traditional and sophisticated timber processing equipment. Merbau is finger-jointed only with a KOMO certificate, with inspection by SKH and with a guarantee / insurance by GIP.

KVT:
KOMO certified: - solid - finger-jointed Preserving: no. Paint systems: Solvent-based paint allowed. Finishing: - transparent - opaque. Hardness: Very hard

Dekker range:
Both raw wood and planed round, as well as finger-jointed with KOMO-GIP guarantee, see Elephant range.

General applications:
Front wall panelling, stairs, plinths, frames, window and door frames, wall panelling etc.
