Greyish red brown, dark red brown or sometimes purple brown.

Colour of sapwood:
White to light brown

Mass density:
850 - 1,200 kg/m³ at 12% humidity

Grain:
Straight-grained, sometimes slightly undulating or slightly cross-grained

Fissure:
May occur when dried too quickly

Warping:
May occur when dried too quickly

Bio-substances:
 In Surinam, a gum-like substance (balata) is derived from this tree.

 

 

  Mould and insects:
Rather termite-resistant

Durability grade:
1, highly durable

Gluing:
Medium 

Machining:
Difficult for manual processing due to high mass density, but allows for excellent planing and turning. Massaranduba can be given a nice, smooth finish

General applications:
Hydraulic civil engineering works in ship worm free areas; bridge decks, floors, cross-bars and garden wood. Furthermore for wood turning and billiard cues, knobs and handles, wind instruments, for violin bows as a replacement for pernambuco, parquet and plank floors
