Botanical name:
Milicia excelsa
Growth area:
Tropical West Africa, including Ghana,
Ivory Coast, Angola, Kenya etc.
Quality:
FAS
Colour of heartwood:
Yellow to dark brown.
Colour of sapwood:
Yellow white, about 100 mm wide.
Sapwood is not allowed for front wall panelling.
Mass density:
650-850 kg/m3 16% m/m average.
Grain:
Straight-grained to very cross-grained. Wood
and door frames often strongly cross-grained. Timber for stairs can be perfectly
straight-grained.
Fissure:
Hardly ever occurs when dried properly.
Warping:
Carefully dried Iroko has a slight tendency
to warp. For timber that must remain purely straight and level, it is advisable
to carefully select the slope of the grain. For window and door timber, it is advisable to
execute the planing and brushing.
Knots:
Large, healthy knots may occur. Depending on
the work and purpose, these may or may not be allowed.

Bio-substances:
Yellow-coloured toxic substance. The
dust released when processing the wood irritates the respiratory trace and the
skin. Infections of the mucous membrane and skin problems may arise. The
parenchyma (seed tissue) is the cause of the light-coloured stripy pattern
typical for Iroko. The wood grain remains clearly visible after finishing the
surface.
Mould and insects:
Large wormholes with a diameter of
10 mm may sometimes occur.
Durability grade:
1 - highly durable, wall panelling
KVT'95 grade A.
Gluing:
Reasonably good.
Machining:
Can be machined with HS or HW cutting
tools. Rebate cutters equipped with precutters to prevent splintering. A fine
wood species for traditional and sophisticated wood processing equipment. Due
to the cross-grain, remember to ensure no tear-out occurss during machining.
KVT:
KOMO certified: - solid - finger-jointed Preserving: no Paint systems: Solvent-based paint allowed; water-based paint as a base system
allowed. Finishing: - transparent - opaque Hardness: hard
Dekker range:
Raw wood in various sizes, also
finger-jointed with KOMO/GIP guarantee, see Elephant range.
General applications:
Front wall panelling, staircases,
plinths, parquet floors, laboratory tables, frames, church benches, interior
panelling, yachts, garden furniture etc. |
