meranti

Botanical name:

Shorea spp.

Growth area:

Malaysia and Indonesia; for the Dutch market the main growth area: is Malaysia.

Quality:

Select and Better

Colour of heartwood:
Deep to light red.

Colour of sapwood:

Grey / green +/- 50 mm wide rims. Sapwood is not allowed for front wall panelling.

Mass density:

The timber industry requires Meranti of at least 450 kg/m3. The weight of Meranti varies between 300 - 800 kg / m3.

Grain:

Generally rather straight-grained.

Fissure:

Internal fissure may occur during a forced drying process. ‘Collapse' can be recognised by detecting the exterior warping of the saw block.

Warping:

Meranti that was dried properly does not have much tendency to warping; the mass density influences the extent of warping. Heavy, deep red Meranti will warp more than light Meranti. For some applications it is advisable to select on mass density first, for example for components requiring large rebate cutting, for example side/bottom-hung sash windows, flap windows and shutting stiles of lift sliding doors.

Knots:

Large, intergrown knots may occur. Whether or not the part can be used must be assessed during production. Around the knots extensive slope of grain occurs, which may cause warping.

Bio-substances:

Gums and resins. Generally, these are not corrosive, but planing and cutting will cause large dust clouds. This is why proper extraction is required.

Mould and insects:

Small wormholes may occur. A limited extent of such so-called pin-holes is allowed for transparent finishes. The pinholes do not affect the strength of the wood. Large wormholes may sometimes occur. These must be cut out.

Durability grade:

3 - 4 - medium to low durability, wall panelling work KVT'95 grade A

Gluing:

Good

Machining:

Can be machined with HS or hard-metal tools. Very easy to saw, plane, profile, drill and sand. An ideal wood type for traditional and sophisticated wood processing machines.

KVT:

KOMO certified: - solid - finger joints - finger jointing / laminated Preserving: no
Paint systems: Solvent-based paint allowed; water-based paint as a base system allowed. Finishing: - transparent - opaque. Hardness: hard

Dekker range:

Very extensive; see Elephant range

General applications:

Wall panelling, stairs, plinths, frames and wall panelling etc. For special applications, the correct meranti species must be selected.
